A post town on the Nakasendō, the highway that once linked Edo and Kyoto. When the railway took another route, Hatago-jyuku was left behind — and so its wooden streets survived. People still live behind the lattices.

A half day is enough to walk the town end to end. Loveliest in the fresh green of early summer and the autumn leaves. English signage runs along the main street.
