江戸と京を結ぶ中山道。旅籠宿は、参勤交代の大名も、旅の商人も、巡礼も泊まってきた山あいの宿場。やがて鉄道が別の道を通り、時代に取り残された——そのことが、かえってこの町並みを今に遺した。格子戸の奥に、今も人が暮らす。
A post town on the Nakasendō, the highway that once linked Edo and Kyoto. When the railway took another route, Hatago was left behind — and so its wooden streets survived. People still live behind the lattices.
